Long before they could write, humans made pictures, built houses and cultivated their environment. The translation of ideas into large and small objects – from drawings, paintings, photographs, sculptures and new media installations to buildings and gardens, entire cities and landscapes – has produced an extraordinary rich history of human creativity. It is a history that you need to be familiar with in order to understand future developments. We need to know how artistic ideas, forms and meanings origined and developed, how artworks function in culture and society and how they impact politics and economy. That is why the critical study of the visual arts, architecture and landscape forms the basis of the Art History degree programme.
As a historian of art, architecture and landscape you will have in-depth knowledge of the material nature of artworks, of the lives, ideas and impact of artists, of patrons and the public, of the perception, criticism, and theory of art and of the places where art is created, displayed and preserved.
Historians of art, architecture and landscape are key intermediaries between the creative world and the general public. They assess value condition and quality, and can explain significance of artworks, buildings, cities and landscapes. Art historians take care that our heritage is handed down to future generations. An Art History degree from Groningen will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to become such an intermediary.

Art is all around us
Everyone knows Auguste Rodin’s The Thinker , but are you also familiar with Cloud Gate by Anish Kapoor? Visual art, architecture and landscapes are at the center of our society: we visit museums, live and work amid historic and modern buildings, and encounter works of art in public spaces and in the media. But art is much more than what we perceive and experience.
Why do people make art? What is art worth and how is it preserved? Is a landscape nature or culture? Are city centres more important than suburbs? Are museums for everyone? Historians of art, architecture and landscape know answers to all these questions.
