We take it for granted that mobile phones, online ordering systems and advanced satellites use software. Moreover, washing machines, medical equipment and transportation systems are also becoming smarter thanks to software and computers. Would you like to explore new ideas for improving devices and software? Then the international Bachelor’s degree programme in Computing Science (Informatica in Dutch) is for you.
Computing Science is a discipline that involves the study and development of computer systems. It is an exact science that can directly be applied in practice. Computing Science at an academic level involves more than just studying existing applications; you will also acquire the fundamental knowledge you need to make discoveries of your own or design improvements for existing systems.
Computing Science also involves high-level programming in several well-known languages. However, programming will only account for 25% of this degree programme. You will also make thorough analyses of the functionality and usability requirements a computer program needs to meet. This requires careful thought beforehand, and the point is to avoid doing what’s already been done before!
Computing Science also involves cooperating, reporting and presenting your ideas and your visions on ‘hot items’ and writing essays in which you give your own vision on the opinions of others. The aim is to build software that works and that is based on sound knowledge. This makes Computing Science a very practical degree programme.
Is this the programme for you?
If you are interested in science and you enjoy creative and analytical thinking, then this is the programme for you. You need to have a good understanding of mathematics, be a meticulous worker and be patient and persevering to find that one bug hidden deep within your software!

What do we do with our data?
This is the age of big data, a phenomenon that is rapidly changing our society and which raises a lot of questions. Can you use social media without sacrificing your privacy? How would you write a smart algorithm that automatically trawls big data for meaningful information? How can we keep the complex software under control? Computing Science is about answering questions like these.
How can you demonstrate that a computer program is fail-safe? How does an algorithm find a pattern in Twitter data? How can you improve human-computer interaction?
