FIRST-YEAR STUDENT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Programming has made me think more analytically
‘The main reason I chose AI is that it is very broad and covers a multitude of subjects in different fields. It's perfect since I am widely interested and I didn't want to commit to one specific field. The subjects I enjoyed most are logic, cognitive psychology and linguistics. I like the way logic and programming have made me think more analytically. Programming has been hard for me though, especially persevering with an assignment when all hope seems to be lost. This is something I am still working on. In my free time I like to play and listen to music and have drinks at my LGBT-student association Ganymedes. I also do committee work there, as I enjoy being an active member.’

Gifted and exceptionally motivated students are given the opportunity to make the most of their talents in the University of Groningen Honours College. If you complete this challenging programme you will earn an additional Honours degree. You will follow special Honours workshops and course units that deepen your knowledge alongside your usual Bachelor’s degree course units.
Among the programme’s strong points are its research into machine learning and big data. We also pay ample attention to the cognitive side of AI, such as cognitive science and computer simulations that predict brain activity. Most lectures will be provided in the Bernoulliborg building on the Zernike Campus, where the programme is based and where you will find the lecturers and research groups.
In the first year of the programme you will follow a wide variety of courses teaching you the basics, like programming, mathematics, cognitive psychology and linguistics. In the second year, you will learn more about specific AI topics, such as neural networks and knowledge technology. The programme in Groningen is taught in English and your fellow students and lecturers will come from all over the world. This will leave you well-prepared for finding a job in this global sector.
