FIRST-YEAR STUDENT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
‘I enjoy programming the most; I like solving puzzles and you get to create things and look at the theory. I actually chose AI because it’s such a diverse field. Although I love science, I’m also interested in art, language and people. I’m doing fine so far and I’m finding it all very interesting, so I’m quite happy to read up on 400 pages of psychology. We have plenty of contact hours, which helps to maintain a regular study pattern. It also means I have enough time left for ballroom dancing and my part-time job. Next year I’ll be doing the Honours College, which means an even greater diversity of course units and projects!’

Gifted and exceptionally motivated students are given the opportunity to make the most of their talents in the University of Groningen Honours College. If you complete this challenging programme you will earn an additional Honours degree. You will follow special Honours workshops and course units that deepen your knowledge alongside your usual Bachelor’s degree course units.
Among the programme’s strong points are its research into machine learning and big data. We also pay ample attention to the cognitive side of AI, such as cognitive science and computer simulations that predict brain activity. Most lectures will be provided in the Bernoulliborg building on Zernike Campus, where the programme is based and where you will find the lecturers and research groups. You will also follow course units from other faculties’ programmes, such as Psychology and Philosophy.
In the first year of the programme you will follow a wide variety of courses. After this all-round training you will specialize in the subdiscipline of Artificial Intelligence of your interest. You could focus on the technical aspects of AI, or instead delve into cognitive science.
