The English language has a long, rich history, an important literary tradition and immense cultural influence. It is the world’s most widely spoken language - virtually everyone will encounter it at some point in their lives. English is an important cultural vehicle in music and film and is of crucial importance in international contacts and transfer, for example in European and world politics, international collaboration and trade, as well as tourism.
English is well on its way to becoming the global lingua franca. People with perfect mastery of the language are therefore needed all over the world, to teach English, translate, interpret and detect changes in the language. However, there is another side to English as
well: it is the language of what was once a powerful global empire, an innovative empire that brought forth important philosophers, scientists, literary authors and a unique theatre tradition.
Graduates of English Language and Culture are specialists in the wide field of this language and culture, including its history and literature, and how the language was and is spoken. They understand how language variation develops and how language is a means of transferring not only meaning but also social messages. They are familiar with the rich world of English literature and how it has influenced Europe as well as the wider world. They can write about literature, theatre and music, and they speak a variant of English at native-speaker level.
