What is American Studies?
Because of its dynamic complexity, American society cannot be studied from the perspective of one discipline alone. The interdisciplinary and multi-faceted nature of American Studies gives students an exciting opportunity to explore the past and present culture of the United States in its international contexts by using tools and academic insights taken from history, literature, art, economics, sociology, political science, media, among others. American Studies also examines the United States within a hemispheric context allowing students to learn about Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean and to study issues relevant to race, class, and gender. The fully English-taught curriculum not only makes American Studies highly accessible to Dutch and international students, but it enables students to acquire excellent speaking, writing and communication skills in English.
The challenging yet dynamic methods of teaching and research provide students with the opportunity to learn from internationally-renowned and highly-trained faculty while gaining competitive skills for the workplace such as critical thinking, using cultural theory, argumentative writing, and applying interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving. American Studies also offers a degree of freedom for students to explore their interests by choosing Special Topics courses, specializing in a field while studying abroad or by completing an internship. Upon graduation, your subject-matter expertise in American economic, political, and cultural affairs combined with your critical-thinking, independent research, and highly proficient English skills will set you apart in your future career. American Studies is comprehensive, innovative and relevant.

Our America, Ourselves
American culture, politics, and economics have had a significant impact on nations around the globe. Our daily lives are shaped more by Hollywood, the Dow Jones, Google, hip hop, Congress, consumer capitalism, and above all, “American Liberty” than by our own national institutions, traditions, and perceptions. To study the emergence and rise of the United States is to study the inner workings of modern society and of ourselves.
Do you find American history, politics, society and popular culture fascinating? Do you want to be challenged to think critically, explore ideas from a range of academic disciplines and engage in rigorous discussions with your classmates and instructors about these topics?
