FIRST-YEAR STUDENT OF ARTS, CULTURE AND MEDIA
I’m really happy with my choice!
‘After studying Nursing for two years, I decided to rekindle my dormant interest in art and culture. I moved from Elburg to Groningen, and started the degree programme in Arts, Culture and Media. The programme is theoretical in nature, but motivates you to discover the practical applications, and offers you the opportunity to explore the various artistic disciplines in depth. In addition, you also follow course units in sociology and philosophy, for instance. ACM is tougher than it sounds, but with some commitment on your part, it’s perfectly possible to combine it with other activities. For example, I’m the PR Officer for the Party and Introduction Committee of the study association, where I’ve met lots of cool people from many different countries. I’m really happy with my choice!’

Gifted and exceptionally motivated students are given the opportunity to make the most of their talents via the University of Groningen Honours College. Completing this challenging programme will result in an additional Honours diploma. Students follow special Honours workshops and other courses that deepen their knowledge, alongside their usual Bachelor’s degree courses.
Research and practice
Within the arts disciplines, you learn a corpus of significant work but also examine the most recent multi-mediated artistic phenomena from the hybrid remakes of Walt Disney films, to the festivalisation of music genres and the narrating of life stories through online fiction. As part of the hands-on aspect of this programme, you attend performances including theatrical productions and film viewings. Finally, in your third year, you create an artistic event such as a music festival or theater production during which you coordinate all facets from the production, promotion, financing and theoretical concept to the negotiation of contracts, performers and venues sites.
ACM offers a grounding in two arts disciplines and one professional arts framework. Because you choose from film, music and theater and between arts analysis and criticism or arts policy and marketing, you are uniquely qualified to combine the most relevant theoretical perspectives for your specialization. This unique combination is ideally suited for the increasingly multi-mediated professional arts worlds. Further you follow core modules in arts- aesthetics, sociology, philosophy, history, education, cognition and media studies with all of your fellow AMC students and therefore you familiarize yourself with the most relevant academic perspectives for examining the arts.

FACTS AND FIGURES
ACM is unique in its combination of theory and practice. Combining skills in arts policy, marketing, analysis and criticism with an in-depth knowledge of film, music or theater provides a multifaceted portfolio for entering the professional arts world, which increasingly demands a broad knowledge of intermediated and mixed-genre artistic practices.
