Europe harbours a wealth of different cultures, identities and mentalities. Although they sometimes cause friction and clash, they also have a lot in common, particularly in relation to the outside world. Their history, culture, linguistic features, literary genres, the evolution of the European national states and the European Union and social order to name but a few. Languages, cultures and societies in Europe have always had an enormous impact on each other, and continue to have today.
If you decide to study European Languages and Cultures, you will master one main language and discover what is really going on behind various European issues. You will be able to use the knowledge and skills you acquire in a whole range of sectors. The sectors that are open to you largely depend on the choices you make in your programme. ELC enables you to design your programme, customizing the curriculum to suit your interests and talents.
Moreover, studying a language is a great experience – a new world unfolds before your eyes. You learn all there is to know about a culture, and find yourself able to connect with people who do not speak your native language. You will become a person who can build bridges, perhaps abroad, as a teacher or perhaps a journalist. Building bridges is easier if you understand how the region you are studying relates to the rest of the world. This is what you will learn in European Languages and Cultures: an interdisciplinary European Studies programme with special expertise in particular languages and cultures.
Is this the programme
Are you keen on languages in general, or on one modern European language and culture in particular? And are you interested in history, culture, literature, politics or current European social affairs? Do you want to broaden your horizons? If so, European Languages and Cultures is the perfect programme for you, with ample opportunity for broadening, deepening and specializing your knowledge.

Borders: what borders?
ELC is, besides learning to speak a European language fluently, an academic programme identifying connections between languages and the cultures to which they belong, and seeing them within a broader European context. In addition to proficiency classes, you have an opportunity to learn about their interrelations. You will discover the role of regions and their political, literary and language variants. This doesn’t mean that culture is necessarily linked to a region. Novels of ghosts and romantic heroes, for example, were extremely popular in different language areas throughout Europe in the 19th Century.
Are literary figures such as Don Quixote or Don Juan typically Spanish? How did the English manage to gain a firmer foothold in their former colonies than the French? Why do Russians have such mixed feelings about Europe?
