THIRD-YEAR STUDENT OF COMPUTING SCIENCE (AND PHYSICS)
‘I started studying Computing Science because I like puzzles, specifically solving them in an efficient and elegant way. In fact, I like applying mathematics. Because Computing Science was not too hard for me, I joined the Honours College. After a course about relativity, I decided to study Physics as well.
For my Bachelor’s thesis, I was looking for a subject, in which I could combine Computing Science and Physics. In my search for the right university, I ended up at an international university in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. For six months, I did research on simulating airflow around wings of airplanes. You can simulate these flows using computer models. Normally, in these models, all equations are solved sequentially, but I implemented them in such a way, that many equations are solved simultaneously. I really enjoined doing research: discovering new algorithms and running simulations that no-one has run before!’
