THIRD-YEAR STUDENT OF ASTRONOMY
‘Astronomy fascinates me because it is the study of the most extreme, mind-boggling phenomena one can imagine. It aims to understand the big picture and tries to answer the most important questions in life.
At the end of the Bachelor’s programme, each student will do a Bachelor’s research project, with topics ranging from stellar populations to gamma-ray bursts.
In my Bachelor’s thesis I will study strong lensed galaxies. Using a computer model, I will reconstruct the image to understand more about the properties of the lensed source and the lensing galaxy itself. We can use the found parameters, such as the mass of the lensing galaxy, to test our current knowledge of dark matter models. My supervisor participates in the strong lensing group at the Kapteyn Institute.
I am looking forward to doing actual research. At the start of the project there is a lot of reading involved to get familiar with the subject. However, after a few weeks I will start applying the actual model to the data. I consider it the ultimate test of all the knowledge I have gathered and a sneak peek into the life of an academic researcher.’
